Series 153 Shinkaisoku (New Rapid) train made its debut in 1972 at the time when state-owned JR competed with private railways in the Kansai area. With its blue on the ivory body color, the Series 153 was nicknamed "Blue Liner." Particularly on the stretch between Osaka and Kyoto, two hub cities in Kansai, the "Blue Liner" was not only faster than its private competitors but nearly as fast as JR express trains. The fleet of Series 153 painted and used as Shinkaisoku was a mixture of early version with low cab cars and late version with high cab units. The "Blue Liner" was loved and used by Kansai urbanites until it was replaced by its successor Series 117 "City Liner" in 1980.
