Fifteen Trains of this type were introduced from 1989 through 1990 for operation on Nanbu Line, which runs between Tachikawa and Kawasaki in a suburb of Tokyo. The brown, orange and yellow tricolor-line on the body was newly employed then. As it was a sole series 205 not equipped with Automatic Train Control system used in Kanto metropolitan area at the time of introduction, this prtotype had a train communication antenna at center on the roof over the cab as its characteristic in appearance.
