Series 211 made its debut in 1985 as a suburban type train meeting the needs of the modern age. It is furnished with such modern equipment as lightweight and easy-to-maintain stainless steel body, FRP front and bolsterless trucks. For operation in cold regions, it has such equipments as snowplow, anti-snow brake, semi-automatic doors (for passengers to open only when they want), and door rail heaters, etc.

Specifically, Series 211-3000 is capable of operating in inclined areas in a configuration of cars Kumoha + Moha + Saha + Saha + Kuha. It is also equipped with long seats along the both sides to accommodate rush hour crowds. It is currently operated on the Takasaki Line and Tohoku Main-Lines, among others.

Kato plans to make an N-scale model of this electric train in the first half of 2004.
