The prototype JNR Series 475 made its debut in 1965 as a powered-up version of the Series 471 AC/DC express train type electric car for operation in 60Hz. power supply regions such as Hokuriku, Kansai, and Kyushu in the western part of Japan. As its sighting characteristic, it has a cream line on the bottom of the body differentiating it from its sister version Series 455 for 50Hz. regions in the eastern part of Japan.
