Series 651 “Super-Hitachi” Express Train Updated on 2004/12/22

Series 651 made its debut in 1989 to replace the conventional Series 485. This was the first AC/DC express train for JR West. It is operated as express train “Super-Hitachi” on the Joban line between Ueno in Tokyo and Sendai in the northern Japan. The streamlined white body was very new style when the train was introduced. The prototype, to which Kato will make the scale model, is the version that was modified and modernized in 2000, just over a decade after its debut. In this version, the dome shaped antenna on top of the roof is removed, the under-floor parts is painted light gray, and red marking meaning “express train” or “smoking car” are added near doors.
