The prototype, Series E231, made its debut in 2000 as a new standard electric train for JR East to succeed Series 209 and E217. The Series E231 comprises two types, suburban type and commuter train type, which is made with smaller seating space to carry as many commuters as possible during rush hours. The scale model is based on Series E231 1000 and over Suburban Type, which was deployed in 2000 to Oyama Electric Train Zone. Different from the said commuter train type, it is furnished with such equipment as toilets and seat layout, which is needed for long distance travel. It has also push buttons on passenger car doors for passengers to open the doors in cold winter, as the E231 Suburban Type is mostly operated in relatively cold regions. This series trains are being used in increasing numbers on the Tohoku and Takasaki lines and the Shonan-Shinjuku line, part of Tokaido mainline. 。
